Attic - Franklin

BEFORE  GARAGE-GURU  REORGANIZATION

AFTER  GARAGE-GURU  REORGANIZATION

z0beforelargeattic06.JPG

A large, open attic filled with household items, seasonal decorations, picture frames, and craft projects.  A lot of existing shelving, but not much order.

And all those itty-bitty Christmas ornaments just lying loose on shelves?  A nightmare for the person who has to cart them down each December into the living area of the house.

z4afterlargeattic05.JPG

The Christmas Corner:

Large labelled bins filled with light-weight decorations (strings of indoor lights; strings of outdoor lights; spotlights; etc.).

Smaller decorations placed with similar ones in labelled clear containers for easy retrieval.

Large stand-alone ornaments easy to see on top of the shelves; and easy to carry downstairs.

Christmas Tree ornaments sorted into like kind and labelled:  balls, bells, plush, metal, wood, glass, ceramic, ...  Drawers on rollie cart can be removed and carried downstairs on their own, or the entire rollie cart can be removed instead.  Whatever is easiest for the decorator!

The smaller area to the left of the stairs was a mess, with cast-off household items scattered among the tangle of duct work.  Clothing, furniture, dried flower arrangements, empty storage containers, picture frames, keepsakes....

z2afterlargeattic03.JPG

Neat and tidy.  Furniture stacked close to the stairs, easily seen and accessed, but compact and out of the way.  The more frequently smaller used items are conveniently placed in front of the seldom used larger items.

Shelves filled with an organized selection of extra household items, easy to see and thus easy to use - or donate.

What a find!  Three brand new unused clothes storage hangers.  What better place to store your extra clothes and keep-sake dresses than your dry and moth-free attic?  Now fully accessible, mounted from the ceiling, and ready to be filled.

A random selection of who-knows-what, all watched over by an enormous St. Nicholas decoration.

z5afterlargeattic06.JPG

Now St. Nick looks right at home, snuggled beside the decorative lamp post and the containers filled with strings of lights.  Open floor in front of him provides easy access, which is a major key to keeping things organized.

The attempt to organize those decorations was there, but the plan had never been fully implemented or followed.

z6afterlargeattic10.JPG

Christmas wreaths languishing in boxes?  No way.  What better way to keep them fresh-looking (and fresh in your mind) than to hang them right there on the wall, ready to be plucked off and hung up somewhere else at the start of the holiday season.

And that lovely white cabinet that has no proper place in the house?  Perfect for those Christmas crafts that you will get to 'some day', and all your wrapping supplies.

z7beforelargeattic11.JPG

And what about all the scrap-booking,
photo frames, Hallowe'en / July 4th / Thanksgiving / Easter / Valentine's Day decorations?  Mixed up everywhere, with wasted space throughout the massive attic.

z7afterlargeattic01.jpg

Immediately to the right of the stairs, out of the way of the duct work, is a new shelf solely dedicated to scrap-booking and photographs.  Further to the right is the area for those 'other' seasonal decorations - separated by season, grouped by type, and stored in clear bins for easy viewing and carting.

Valentine's Day bin;
4th of July bin;
Hallowe'en shelves, sorted and organized.
